Football Player/Actor - "Los Angeles Rams", "Little House on the Prairie"

Editor's Note: I don't usually include athletes here, but I make the exception for Merlin Olsen because he was also an actor on one of my favorite shows. Merlin died from Mesothelioma, a direct result from exposure to Asbestos. Like many of us he had been exposed to Asbestos throughout his life. Unfortunately for him the exposure proved to be fatal. What a sad waste of a man with a lot of talent. All because the government failed for decades to stop production of a product everyone knew was dangerous.

Editor's Note: Several years ago, I was putting together a 50th Birthday party for my brother and I contacted several of the Television Stars from the "Classic Era" to see if they would send things to my brother. Fess Parker was one of the first to respond. My brother received a really cool Happy Birthday letter signed by both Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. A True Class Act. It's a sad day.

Actor - "I Spy", "The Greatest American Hero"
June Havoc Age 97. Died March 28, 2010
Actress - "Baby June" Sister of Gypsy Rose Lee
Edward "Coots" Matthews Age 86. Died March 31, 2010
Oil Firefighter - "Boots and Coots"

Editor's Note: Three men, Asger "Coots" Hansen, Edward "Boots" Matthews and Paul "Red" Adair were the inspiration for the movie "The Hellfighters" starring John Wayne, though the main character was loosly based on Paul "Red" Adair. I lived in Houston for many years and got a chance to meet in person Paul "Red" Adair. A few years later, I was able to have a really great telephone conversation with him. It was fascinating to hear him speak of fighting those oil fires and also what it was like to work with John Wayne. These guys are all legends and it's sad to see another one of them pass away. Red Adair died in 2004 at age 89.

Art Linkletter Age 97. Died May 26, 2010
Television Host / Disney Legend -"Kids Say the Darndest Things", "The Art Linkletter Show"

Editor's Note: If you are over the age of 35, you know who Art Linkletter is. For those of us who fall within the Baby Boomer Range, Art was a Household recognized name from the middle 1950's to the late 1990's. Like Allen Funt, Art Linkletter always brought a funny show with him when he appeared on television. Art was also very active in anti-drug causes because he lost a daughter to drug abuse in 1969.

The last time I saw Art Linkletter was on the Larry King Show. It was good to see him again and know that he was still making people laugh. He was a classic icon from an era that is dead now. An era of television that was funny and entertaining, without being offensive and disgusting like Betty White's recent Saturday Night Live appearance.

Thanks for the laughs Art. Applause, Applause, Applause!!

Himan Brown Age 99. Died June 04, 2010
Radio Creator, Director, Producer - "Dick Tracy", "Adventures of the Thin Man", "CBS Radio Mystery Theater"

Editor's Note: When I was a teenager in the 1970's, one of my favorite things to do, was to go to my room early and lay awake listening to some of the old time radio shows that were broadcast. Among those were "Gunsmoke", "Fibber McGee and Molly", "The Lone Ranger" and my favorite "CBS Radio Mystery Theater".

I love a good mystery and the writing on those CBS productions was stellar. From the squeaking door at the beginning, it never failed to grab my interest and keep me listening until the plot resolved. Those of you who listened with me know exactly what I mean, the rest of you missed out on some great story telling. With each episode, they let you know Himan Brown, was responsible.

Thank You Himan Brown.

Editor's Note: For those of you who know Orchestra Music and songs to sign along with, you know Mitch Miller. He ranks second in my mind only to Glenn Miller or maybe the Dorsey brothers. All of them were greats. If you have ever watched the movie "Giant", the scene near the end of the movie where Rock Hudson has the fight in the diner, features the Mitch Miller version of "The Yellow Rose of Texas", one of the best chorus versions of a song ever done.

August
Patricia Neal Age 84. Died August 08, 2010
Actress - "Hud", "A Face in the Crowd", "The Homecoming"

Editor's Note: Patricia Neal was a terrific actress. She starred in many films from John Wayne War Movies to family stories like "Homecoming", the predecessor to the television series, "The Waltons." Patricia was one of the few actresses who had two distinct careers. One before a series of strokes and one after the strokes. Though her speech slowed down, she still proved dynamic on both big screen and small. A true class act is gone but her film legacy is great. Good Night Mama.
